About Dr. Tanuja Damani

Dr. Tanuja Damani provides compassionate surgical care, with expertise in minimally invasive/robotic surgery, as part of the Department of Surgery at NYU Langone Health. She has extensive experience in complex abdominal surgery for gastrointestinal conditions, which has been the focus of her practice for the last 15 years. In addition to providing surgical care to the highest standards in her field and focusing on achieving excellent outcomes, Dr. Damani also pays special attention to patient-physician relationship, as well as quality of life and cosmetic outcomes.

Dr. Damani was recruited to be the Surgical Director of Center for Esophageal Health at NYU Langone Health, one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers, with recognition for their commitment to patient care, education, research and innovation. U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” ranks NYU Langone one of the top hospitals in the country for gastroenterology and GI surgery. The Center for Esophageal Health at NYU Langone is a comprehensive center for diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), hiatal/paraesophageal hernias, and esophageal motility disorders like achalasia. The emphasis is on an integrated and collaborative approach, with specialists from Gastroenterology, Surgery, ENT/Allergy, Swallowing therapists and Dietitians, allowing patients to understand their diagnosis and evaluate their treatment options. She serves as the Associate Professor of Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Prior to starting at NYU, Dr. Damani was the Director of Robotic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Health in New Jersey, overseeing two campuses, with exponential growth in robotic surgery volume under her leadership. Before that, she practiced at Lenox Hill Hospital/Northwell Health in New York City for 4 years. As part of her ongoing commitment to surgical education, she also served at the Assistant Program Director for the general surgery residency there. She has held faculty positions at New York Medical College, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School.

After finishing High School at the United Nations International School in New York City, Dr. Damani attended Long Island University, where she graduated summa cum laude with a major in Molecular Biology and distinction in Honors Program. She subsequently finished medical school at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, and then moved to Chicago for her surgical internship and residency at the Loyola University Medical Center. She obtained a fellowship/specialty training in minimally invasive surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Damani is board certified in General Surgery, credentialed in robotic surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Damani is a nationally certified proctor for robotic surgery, has performed close to 1,000 robotic procedures, and is actively involved in educating and training surgeons learning to perform robotic surgery. She has presented articles and videos on minimally invasive surgery at national meetings, and has coauthored numerous publications in several journals. She was also one of the first surgeons in the state of New Jersey to offer robotic LINX surgery for GERD/reflux. She is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and sits on their Robotics and Foregut Task Force committees. She is also a member of Surgery for Society of Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and the American Foregut Society (AFS).
